In the late afternoon I decided to rest in the hammock. At first a flicker flew right over me and I could hear its wings. Then I peeked out over the hammock edge to see the bird enjoying a good soak in the bird bath. Adorable.
Next I heard a bluejay. Soon another flicker arrived on the scene and was in the tree above me. With bird harmony I fell asleep to the sound of crickets serenading me. What could be more peaceful on a beautiful fall day. Perfect!
I saw a fritillary butterfly today on the front property earlier in the afternoon. A friend from Land and Water Conservation came to advise me on shrubs that would act as an eight foot privacy screen. He suggested I do several rows. A lower canapy shrub row and then a wildflower area below the shrubs. I am getting excited to learn more about upcoming landscaping options as we explore how to turn this landscape into an edible landscape for me and for wildlife. The idea is to remove more of the lawn area and make more native habitat. I am grateful to have friends in the nature business. They are such a help to me.
